For over a decade, Royal Coffee has been roasting their own beans and serving drinks in Phoenix, AZ. I only recently found them when I took my new job right up the street from their Biltmore location. There are actually two stand in the Biltmore Fashion Park- one on the street side for commuters and business folk heading to work, and one inside the mall at an outdoor kiosk for shoppers, mall walkers, and those just looking for a cool place to chill and drink great coffee. There are, however, five total locations in the Phoenix and Tempe area.
Location. I’ve only been to the street side stand of the Biltmore Fashion Park. And when I say street side stand, I mean the location is in the lobby area of a store and office building. It took me a little while to find it, because I wasn’t ready for a small kiosk in the lobby. It’s still well laid out with plenty of sitting area and a super friendly staff. Parking can get a little dicey when the Fashion Park is busy and that would mean a short walk, but it’s okay. Just follow the yellow signs and enter at the red door. Don’t let the unusual location fool you- it’s still serious coffee business.
Service. Every time I’ve been to Royal, I’ve received excellent service. The baristas are more than willing to talk coffee, business, beans, and whatever else I’ve got going on that day. My first visit to Royal also happened to be the first time I tried a Cortado. Why? Because the staff was willing to talk with me about their menu and explain what the drinks were to me. I had no idea what it was. I’d heard of a Cortado before, but they patiently and graciously explained it to a Coffee Newbie like me. For that, I am very grateful.
Coffee. And the Cortado was excellent. Since that first visit, I’ve discovered their pour-overs, mochas, and iced drinks are excellent as well. Their lattes and mochas are not too sweet, and they are absolute craftsmen when it comes to rocking their Hario V60 drippers. The coffee is always fresh, always flavorful, and so far- always available in whole bean to take home as well. They recently updated their packaging, which of course makes me happy, and it looks as good as it tastes.
Conclusion. I highly recommend Royal Coffee for their service and coffee. It’s my goal to try an make it to all their locations to see if they’re are consistently awesome as some of the other local coffee chains in Phoenix, like Press Coffee. But I have little doubt that I’ll find the same excellence at all their locations. Have you been to any I didn’t list? Hit me up in the comments.
