I have four kids- a girl and three boys. My middle son was born with eye muscle imbalances that have required three surgeries so far, and visits to an eye specialist a couple times a year. His specialist is in Scottsdale, AZ and the Mrs. and I will take turns driving him down there for his appointments. The last time she took him, she found this coffee shop called Boss Coffee, and raved about how awesome it was. On his next appointment date, I experienced it myself.
From the outside, Boss looks like a typical second wave shop- a drive thru with green signs in a strip mall (The signs are always green because Alex Fisenko told us they need to be green). But once you step inside, you realize this is a special kind of shop. Bottles, exposed wood, and decorative chalk art line the walls. The bottles and signs gave no small hint that this joint takes their cold brew very seriously. Stumptown and Water Avenue bags of whole bean coffee on display gave no small hint they take the flavor and freshness of their coffee very seriously as well. Both the flavor of their cold brew and their coffee paled in comparison to the service offered at this great cafe.
The Service. The two guys working behind the bar and counter at Boss were special. When I asked what they recommended, they asked questions about what kind of coffee I liked and matched their menu to my palate. They both had fantastic senses of humor, and were quite willing to joke around with me and my boy about various menu items, including how to pronounce caramel in the Salted Caramel Latte. And the answer is- however the customer pronounces it is how they say it. Too good! They told me what kind of espresso machine they were running, talked about selling cold brew in custom growlers vs plastic bottles, what kind of beans they use and why, and also suggested letting my double shot of espresso cool a little bit to get stronger peanut butter flavor notes.
The Coffee. I drank too much coffee from Boss, but there were so many delicious things to try and report to you on, I felt it necessary. After all, you deserve it. I had the espresso, and it was quite possibly the most flavorful blend I’ve ever had. I thought it was a single origin because the peanut butter did indeed pop as hard as the barista said it would. It was a Water Avenue bean and it was delicious. The same espresso also went in to the lattes I ordered. One for myself and one for the Mrs. I had the Honey Bear and brought her home the Salted Caramel. The latte sizing was my least favorite part of the process. I bought two 12 ounce cups. They had 16 ounce cups available, but there’s not any more espresso in those. Just more milk. this is pretty standard across the industry, but it’s not something I care for. For those interested, they are running a Nuova Simonelli espresso machine.
Lastly, I sampled the nitro cold brew and wanted to take some for later in a growler. When they heard I wouldn’t be drinking it right away, the boys changed their recommendation from nitro to regular, telling me the nitro wouldn’t taste as fresh as long as the regular in the bottle. So, I made the switch and brought home a bottle of their ‘French’ cold brew. My son tried their Strawberry smoothie, and they hooked him up with a large at the price of a medium. Needless to say, he’s a fan. Not just because of the smoothie, but because the service was so wonderful.
The Conclusion. You know how much I love branding, and Boss had branded sleeves to go on plain white coffee cups. They were a nice touch and they had #coffeelikeaboss printed on them as well, which I thought was cute. Being able to bring a reusable cold brew bottle back and get it for cheaper is a plus in my book. First, it makes me want to return to get more great cold brew. That’s good for them. Second, I get it cheaper than having to buy it at the same price in a plastic bottle every time. That’s good for me. Third, there’s no waste from me drinking cold brew- the bottle is handsome and reusable. That type of environmental stewardship is good for all of us. Because of where the cafe is in relation to the doctor’s office and our great experiences, we’ll be regulars at Boss for a long time to come.
