In Episode 91 of the Orange Cactus Coffee Podcast, Mike and I talked way too long about using the word ‘craft’ when describing coffee. Then we talked about Sweet Maria’s decision to stock the Aillio Bullet R1. We’re pretty excited about that and hope they start carrying spare parts, replacements parts, and even the exhaust ports on hand. They posted a video about the experience, and Mike ran into an internet troll in the comments sections of their video.
Next, we talked about all the drippers we’ve recently tried and how impressive the cheap, plastic, Hario V60 was. Then, switching to Manny G Recommends, we talked about making great coffee with the Kalita Wave 155 and 185. Manny recommends not excavating your coffee during the bloom phase, and using a 45 second bloom. Split the remaining water into two pours.
For our Coffee Review, we took a look at the coffee we got from our #Coast2CoastRoast Brew Pal- Some Supercrown Coffee, a washed single origin from Honduras Cocamol.
For our Coffee Experience, I talked about my second job working as a cashier and how I checked out a customer buying instant decaf coffee. This was their preferred flavor preference. This reinforced my belief that you cannot win everyone to your fancy coffee. Secondly, I visited Starbucks on my lunch break. I drank an Ethiopian made in the clover and it was really good. The Siren is pushing small batch, single origin, specialty coffee offerings. My last experience was a horrible mocha from McCafe. It was so terrible. It was really disgusting. Mike’s experience was at Method coffee where Mike thinks he was waited on by the owner. During his story he called it Yellow Leaf the first few times. But it was Method, so don’t let him throw you off.
We also talked about an epic podcast that we listened to: GaryVee at Dutch Bros. Coffee. If you haven’t listened to it, I would highly recommend it. However, I would caution that GaryVee uses profanity in his speeches and Q&A sessions.
Mike gave an update about the Bullet’s location inside the indoor roasting room with outside venting. then we moved on to learning more about growing coffee in the Book of Roast.
