In Episode 87 of the Orange Cactus Coffee Podcast, Mike and I provide the loudest voice in coffee. The clearest voice in coffee. The coffee-est voice in coffee. We had a great time talking about experiencing specialty, artisan coffee.
New Drippers in the house. Mike gave us an update on his experience with the December Dripper. He’s had a couple weeks to spend with it, and he gave us a noncommittal answer on whether you need to add it to your collection.
I also added the Kalita Wave 185 Tsubame to my collection, and I can tell you: It looks cool but it’s not really worth the amount of money I paid for it. But if you want all your friends to know you dropped a cool hundie on a copper dripper- this is the one for you. Mike got a great beat going by adding the Fellow Stagg X and XF to the copper Wave.
I’m on the look out for St. Anthony’s Phoenix 70, and will likely pull the trigger some time in the near future. But we still recommend the Blue Bottle Coffee Dripper for those who want the best all-around dripper for a wide variety of cups.
Coffee Experience. Mike shared a negative coffee experience getting all the syrup at the bottom of the cup while drinking a mocha from Method Coffee in Prescott. I was already done with them based on the last negative experience I had there. If I want a frozen, blended, something or another, I’ll drink something from them, but not espresso or coffee. Mike also asked the question of hot to best up-sell whole bean coffee from a cafe. Method has a display that came across as begging and needy, and did not incline him to want to buy.
Also Kyle, the Ghostly Roaster, shared an incredible batch brew experience he had at Pearland Coffee Roasters. He was surprised to get a great cup from a batch brew.
Coffee Review. Mike and I talked about Tim Wendelboe’s recent victory in the 2017 Nordic Roasting Championships. Elia Rojas and Finca Tamana.
Brew Tip of the Week. We referred to Scott Rao’s book Everything by Espresso for our brew tip of the week. Scott points out the need to ensure the heat of the slurry itself is high enough.
Orange Cactus Coffee Update. We give you another sneak peak behind the curtain to see what we’re planning for our store. It concludes new bags, new boxes, and new coffee offerings in our existing flavor categories: Saguaro and KingCup.
