In Episode 85 of the Orange Cactus Coffee Podcast, we celebrate Mike’s Birthday by drinking Blue Bottle Coffee and eating Blue Bottle Chocolate (from Tcho) that we received from our August Brew Pal from our participation in #Coast2CoastRoast. Our pal was sick, and she delivered us coffee this week. Thank you. We’re also participating in the October swap, and we highly recommend the group.
We also talked about the debate and feedback we’ve received about specialty, third-wave, artisanal, small batch, hand-crafted style coffee. Mike suggests this description as a new reference category- to be used every time. Onyx has a scale of traditional-modern, and that seems a really great place to start. But ultimately, some coffee is roasted darker or lighter. And where is the line for specialty coffee? What does the market near you prefer? Dark or light roast?
For our Coffee Experience, Mike visited Press Coffee in North Scottsdale again. He talked about the great service, bad layout, and wonderful coffee he drank. The Press barista hooked Mike up with a free shot of espresso, and that got us talking about whether or not cafes should give out free drinks or not. We also talked about whether cafes should be really comfortable, or just look good and be so uncomfortable that customers don’t stay very long.
Manny G Recommended the Barista Hustle Brewed Coffee Compass. From the flavor profile you get from your brewed cup, it gives you actions to take to get it back into the ‘balanced’ zone of the coffee flavor compass.
Mike also talks about our journey of finding Third Wave Water. They just had a successful appearance on Shark Tank, and received a $100,000 investment to grow their water supplement business. We love TWW. There’s no doubt about it. We’ve loved the idea of being able to control all the variables for great coffee.
Lastly, I sang Happy Birthday to Mikey.
