In Episode 80 of the Orange Cactus Coffee Podcast, Mike and I talked about his December Dripper order that has still not shown up yet. Mike can’t get December Dripper to answer his e-mails, can’t get a dripper from his Kickstarter backing before the SCA or Prima Coffee can, and can’t find the deleted Instagram criticism that December Dripper deleted to protect their inability to get backers their drippers. Oh well.
We moved on to the news that Nestle bought a majority interest in Blue Bottle. Also, we talked about Cat and Cloud’s Podcast where Chris and Jared thought teaching employees about the history of coffee was secondary to understanding the vision and culture of the company. Their podcast is legendary and highly recommended.
Coffee Experience. Mike and I visited Royal Coffee Bar and Press Coffee last week. Royal is close to our work in Phoenix, and we’ve made it a habit of visiting them on our way in. The cortado and service was only okay this time. Their employee turnover seems to be a little high, certainly higher than at Press Coffee. Press was awesome, as usual. the service was fantastic, and the cortado, our over, and mocha were terrific as well.
Window shopping at a Williams & Sonoma shop, Mike tried talking me into pulling the trigger on a Breville at-home espresso machine.
Coffee Review. Mike picked up a single origin naturally processed Ethiopian Konga coffee from Press, and I bought a blend called Early Edition. Both coffees are excellent, and highly recommended. You can pick them up online from their site. The only thing we would like to see Press do is offer their coffee in resealable bags. Like my underwear.
Brew Tip of the Week. This week’s brew tip comes straight from the man himself- Scott Rao. He made an instructional video for using the Hario V60. Very surprisingly to me, Scott recommends using a plastic V60 over a ceramic, glass, or metal version.
We give an Orange Cactus Coffee Roasting update where Mike talked about the samples we received from Sweet Maria’s and Genuine Origin. The introductory email from Genuine Origin included a question about the first concert we had. Mike’s first concert was Coldplay. Mine was Steve Taylor. Kinda weird and out of left field, but led to an outstanding story about Mike’s Coldplay experience. My first experience with chocolate roasted espresso beans was equally epic.
Coffee Knowledge. This segment is from The Book of Roast by Roast Magazine. It was about the genus and species of coffee.
