In Episode 76 of the Orange Cactus Coffee Podcast, Mike and I were motivated by watching Simon Sinek’s video on finding the ‘why’ behind we’re trying to enter into the Specialty Coffee world. Check out his first TED Talk video, consider your own ‘why,’ and we’d love to know if you think we’re doing a good job of communicating our ‘why’ in our overall approach.
We kicked the show off talking about some of the books and manuals out there to help you start your own coffee shop, including the very popular espresso business plan.
Then we talked about the newly arrived Fellow Stagg XF Dripper and Big Jo’ mugs that I recently received in the mail. I bought these, and unlike my last shopping experience with Fellow, I didn’t track the shipment and don’t know if it took a circuitous route to get to me from Cali. Their products are beautiful, but lack functionality- especially the filters.
We also talked about the Wintersmiths clear ice spheres. I’m really digging the ice, and I think it’s an incredible touch point for iced coffee, cold brew, or any cold drinks. I served Mike some KingCup cold brew out of a Hario cold brew bottle, and the flavor is incredible. The clear ice is part of the alcohol bar experience, and we think that certain bar touch points from that industry should make their way over to coffee.
I put Mike on the spot to talk about roasting over the last 6 months, and how his transition from the Behmor to Aillio has been. He also touches on his experience trying to find the right green coffee beans.
In closing, Mike offered up two brew tips that came from the Orange Cactus Coffee Community. The first one is from Gritz Gravy to try your bulletproof coffee, or butter coffee, at a 15-1 ratio in a French Press, using a dark roast, with Kerrygold butter and MCT oil. Second, DannyBoy7783 commented on one of our videos, asking about making the transition from tea drinking to coffee drinking. For tea drinkers, we recommend a lighter roast with a fruitier African at a 20-1 ratio. Hope that helps. Enjoy!
