In Episode 62, Mike and I did a Coffee Review of Sam’s Choice Costa Rica Tarrazu single source coffee that is from the same region that our Saguaro comes from. When I saw that Wal-Mart was roasting the same coffee we were, I was worried. But they did such a terrible job that we’ve got nothing to worry about. It’s a shame, because they could’ve done something special with that coffee. Walk-Mart could do whatever they want to make sure this is a great coffee, but they don’t.
We also talked little a bit about Brandywine Coffee Roaster’s great coffee bagging and compared their real wax seal to Sam’s Choice’s wax seal screen print images. It doesn’t even come close.
We also talked about an article that Mike found and really blew his mind. Starbuck’s Coffee has an unusually high amount of caffeine when compared to other caffeinated beverages.
Manny G Recommended drinking espresso straight, and suggests you stir it up before you drink it. Referring to Chris Baca’s video on the Salami Shot of espresso, Manny G knows that drinking espresso is awesome and enlightening when to comes to educating your coffee palate.
For our Coffee Experience, we talked about BOSS Coffee in North Scottsdale, AZ. It took me until my third trip to get poor service. The first two were awesome, but the last one left something to be desired. We also talked about my trip to Village Coffee Roasters and the Ghostly Roaster’s trip to a cafe as well. Village Coffee Roasters only offers pour-overs in the afternoons when the shop isn’t busy. Ghostly Roaster ran into that at another coffee shop, where he wanted a Chemex, was the only one in line, and was refused since it wasn’t the correct time of day for them to serve it. He also didn’t care for cafes telling people there are light, medium, and dark coffee- but they have no standards or descriptions for those grades. I also ask the question ‘how many chances do you give a cafe before you right them off completely?’
Our Coffee History segment comes from The Book of Roast, published by Roast magazine. It’s a compilation of articles from years of publishing. We read a portion of a journal from a coffee roaster in Dayton, OH.
