In Episode 55, Mike and I talked about batch brewers, hand espresso makers, specialty coffee, and an upcoming episode where Scott Rao answers your questions.
After listening to our conversation with Chris Griffith that covered coffee hospitality at home for family and friends, Manny G Recommended this list of SCAA certified batch brewers. They included the Behmor Brazen Connected 8 Cup Coffee Maker and Connected Brewer Coffee Brewer System, the Bonavita BV1900TS and BV1900 TD, the BUNN 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, the Cuisinart PurePrecision Pour Over Coffee Brewer, the KitchenAid KCM0802 and KCM0801OB, the OXO On 9-Cup and On 12-Cup Coffee Makers, the Technivorm Moccamaster, and the Wilfa Precision Coffee Maker. Mike and I are thinking of buying the Behmor Brazen and a Bonavita, so we get a broader look at some of these batch brewers.
For our Coffee Review section, we introduced the Espresso Flair. It’s another at-home, hand-making espresso machine. For about $160, it claims to give you 9 bars of pressure and a real shot. The portafilter is a custom size, which is different than the Espresso Forge, that uses the traditional portafiler size.
We also talked about customers wanting what they want and how cafes should be patient with their customers as they seek to help them understand and appreciate specialty coffee. Having since listened to the Cat and Cloud Podcast, we really loved Chris Baca’s episode and cannot recommend it highly enough.
We also talked about coffee ratings and what numbers our coffees and others are. Mike brought up Luxury Coffee and I talked about the energy of the Dutch Bros experience. We discuss whether it’s easier to give great customer service in a drive thru where the engagement is quicker than in a sit down place, and whether the high energy of Dutch Bros is more of a turn off than a turn on.
Lastly, we talk about Scott Rao joining the Orange Cactus Coffee Podcast in order to answer your questions. Send us your questions and we’ll pass them along. Thank you for all the questions we’ve received so far.
