In Episode 44, Mike and I talked a little bit more about the business side of Orange Cactus Coffee a little more than we had recently. The conversation was spurred on by a Manny G Recommendation and our recent experience roasting up our Saguaro offering.
Basically, Manny G recommended looking into Teespring to run a T-shirt campaign for our stuff. I don’t like giving away the ability to customize each touchpoint in an order. Mike suggested we may give that portion up to focus on our coffee. But there have also been struggles with our roasting.
Mike had two batches go bad on him in the Behmor 1600+. For the first batch, he didn’t push a button soon enough and the auto-shut off kicked in and powered it down. The result was an under-roasted batch that we couldn’t use. For the second batch, the temperature shot way up on him, unexpectedly, and the bean was over-roasted. No idea what happened on the second one.
Manny G also recommended the Stone Creek Coffee Podcast. Their last episode for the foreseeable future will be Episode 50, but you can still go back and listen to their shows from the beginning. They do spend the first few minutes of each show drinking whiskeys and talking about alcohol, so if you’re sensitive to that subject matter- I would suggest skipping the show or at least the first 10 minutes or so. The rest of their shows contain wonderful coffee information.
I talked a bit about a recent negative Coffee Experience I had at Elevate Coffee in north Phoenix. The espresso was really bad. Not sure what’s going on, but the quality of the drinks seems to be heading downhill at Elevate. I might not stop in anymore on my way home from youth football games in the Valley of the Sun.
Our Brew Tip is to be careful when you pour coffee and water into the Aeropress cylinder. Hot water is hot. That is all.
