23: Mike’s favorite number.
Mike talks about the lack of a coffee shop experience he had after he went out for dinner with the Mrs to Olive Garden and tried to find some coffee afterwards. It was 7 pm on Friday night. Cuppers closed at 6pm. Peavine closed at 6pm. His third attempt was a drive through at Yellow Leaf Coffee. Closed at 6pm. Starbucks and Dutch Bros didn’t make the cut for a quality cup, and Mike didn’t want to take a 6 month old baby through a bar set up to get a cup of coffee at the Raven Coffee Shop. Wild Iris Coffee was further than he wanted to drive. We also recounted the incredible experience we had at Peixoto Coffee down in Chandler, AZ.
We concluded there was no place in Prescott or Prescott Valley, AZ to get a blueberries to the face experience, unless you go to Mike’s house and get him to hand pull a shot of espresso out of the Staresso machine.
While that needs to change, I reiterated my admiration for Dutch Bros for doing what they want to do in coffee. The Cat and Cloud standard of the customer leaving their cafe happier than when the came in, and Dutch Bros seems to be handling that category.
We talk again about Black Stripe roasting in Canada, and conclude there is plenty of room in Specialty Coffee for your view of what coffee should be.
We review the Blue Bottle Dripper Video question, talk about the bloom, the ratio, and how to get the most out of your Blue Bottle dripper.
- Do we do a 2-1 bloom?
- Do we do an 11-1 ratio brew?
For Orange Cactus Coffee, we give a product update, a packaging update, and tell how we want to create an experience around coffee. I confess we ordered some ball caps with our logo on them. Mike came up with a thought and I put them into production. We tell you it costs over $25 to make the hat, $3 for the box, and $7 for shipping. That equals $35 and we’ll have to call it the zero-profit hat.
We also reveal we have mug samples on the way and I talk about my upcoming trip to Colorado Springs.
