Caffeine, Q&As, and Roasting.
Mike and I answer a listener/reader question and delve into the spiritual nature of drinking coffee. We also look quickly at what the Bible has to say about eating and drinking in general. We talk about the properties of coffee, including its caffeine content. While talking about being under the influence of caffeine, we talk about how much caffeine is too much to consume throughout the day and how much caffeine is in all those pre-workout supplements people take before hitting the gym.
We talk about the nature of coffee plants, coffee GMOs, and whether keeping roasting secrets is better for roasters and the industry in general. I argue that sharing roasting information makes all roasters better, and Mike argues that ‘a rising tide raises all ships.’ There really are no secrets when it comes to roasting. There are so many different variables: bean, roasters, probes, gauges, cooling process, etc. that even if you share, it’s impossible to duplicate someone else’s work exactly. We revisit Scott Rao’s roasting principles in his book.
We close out the episode by talking about the roasted bean that we’re planning to offer: The Saguaro. This bean is a single origin from Mexico, and Mike has roasted it to perfection. I’m that passionate about the coffee Mike roasted. He’s dialed it in and it’s very good. Hopefully, we’ll have something available soon.
