As I was checking out new Cold Brews around the country to bring some in for our Cold Brew Cold War, I came across Klatch Coffee. Klatch is an intriguing company. They have a training center and coffee lab, five retail locations in Southern California, and a location in Korea. That’s pretty incredible. If you’re getting a similar vibe to Blue Bottle Coffee, who has locations on both U.S. coasts and in Japan, I think there are some similarities. But there are a lot of ways that Klatch is unique.
Coffee Fest Champions. Klatch Coffee won 1st place in both America’s Best Cold Brew and America’s Best Espresso during the 2016 Coffee Fest in Anaheim, CA. Coffee Fest has competitions for espresso, latte art, and cold brews. There are three Coffee Fests in 2017: Nashville (03/17-19), Chicago (06/9-11), and Portland (10/13-15). I’d love to make one of them this year.
Coffee Training. When I compared Klatch’s prices to other coffee training places, they’re very affordable. At first I thought that because they’ve won awards the cost would reflect that. But it doesn’t. Instead, what’s reflected in their affordability is that they have a great love for coffee and a passion to share it with others.
Award Winning Espresso Sales. Frequently when baristas win awards at competitions, the common consumer never has the chance to get that drink from that barista. Worse, the judges spit the coffee out and the winner’s formula is lost forever. If you’ve listened to our podcasts, you know I don’t think much of competitions like this. Now if the end consumer- you, if you can taste this same drink, then I’m all for having competitions to learn and expand. That’s why restaurants like ZinBurger, who win awards, put the trophies in the restaurant for all to see, and then put the award-winning burger on the menu earn my respect, admiration, and money to try the burger. More coffee shops should do the same. Klatch Coffee does it. You can order their award-winning espresso straight from their site. You can drink it in their shops. Awesome.
Green Bean Sales. In addition to offering their award-winning beans, Klatch also offers green beans for sale that they have sourced so you can roast your own beans. That’s wonderful and unique. I don’t know of any other cafe that invites you into competition with them. Only clearly, they don’t view it as competition. They view it as spreading the love and passion. It really makes sense. You can learn to roast and serve from them, then they will help you get set up and on your feet.
The New Mug Glass. I love seeing new glasses, mugs, and gadgets for coffee. When I checked out the merch on their site, I wasn’t really feeling the style. They have mugs, tumblers, water bottles, and other things, but only the ‘glass can’ stood out to me. I’ve never seen that before from a coffee shop. I’ve seen it from soda companies, and my father-in-law worked for Coca Cola for a while and had gave me some. The shape makes them very cool to drink out of.
Leave some comments if you have first hand experience with Klatch Coffee. We’ll check ’em out further, try their coffee, and report back in either a video, podcast, or blog post. Stay tuned for more of the big things Klatch Coffee is doing.
